U.S. Veteran

West Lebanon, NH – Richard “Sarge” Lyndes, 82, died Monday, October 29, 2012 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, while surrounded by his loving family.

Sarge was born August 18, 1930 in Lisbon, NH a son of the late Richard Frank and Merna (McGuire) Lyndes. He was raised in Lisbon and attended school there until he entered the Army in 1947. On January 19, 1952 Sarge married Diana J. Corbeil in Littleton, NH and then shortly after was deployed overseas to Korea. After returning stateside, Sarge reenlisted and became a career military man and was stationed at many bases throughout the United States including Virginia and Alaska and also in Germany before finally moving to the Upper Valley and working at CRREL, where he commuted to the Greenland Ice Caps and received an Army commendation medal. It was during this time that Sarge was reactivated and again deployed overseas, this time to serve a tour of duty in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star. Sarge finished his military career back at CRREL, retiring in 1970. He then worked as a manager at the Super Car Wash in West Lebanon before becoming a truck driver, working for several different people in the Upper Valley including RSD, Clifford’s, Roger Roberts and Peanie Goodwin. Never one to sit still, Sarge was happiest when he was working and helping others. In later years Sarge and Diana spent the winters in Lake Wales, FL, until it became too difficult to travel.

In his free time Sarge enjoyed square and polka dancing, snowmobiling, camping, having coffee at Evans and The Fort, watching wrestling and westerns and reading. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. Sarge will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother who will remain greatly loved and missed by many. He was a current member of the Lebanon American Legion Post # 22, a former member of the Lebanon Elks Club # 2099, a former member of the White River Jct., V.F.W. Post 2571 and took great pride to have lead the Lebanon Memorial Day Parade for many years.
