Enfield— Seymour A. Bortz, retired ceramics engineer and consultant died on June 1, 2012 at the Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, NH at age 89.
Sy Bortz was born in Chicago, IL on August 2, 1922 to Edward Bortz and Fanny Kaplan Bortz. He served during WWII first as part of the 82nd Airborne Glider Division and later as a medic in the South Pacific. He was part of the original group that landed on Okinawa. Sy worked at IITRI, in Chicago, for about thirty years and then worked at Wiss, Janney, Elstner in Northbrook until his retirement at 88 years of age. He and his wife Katherine moved to Enfield, NH in 2010 to enjoy life in their home on Mascoma Lake.
Seymour Bortz was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Nathler Bortz, and his sister, Adele Goodman.
He is survived by his beloved wife Katherine Austin and his children; Sheri, Trudy and Steve Bortz, Kathy Rappaport, Jeanette and Victoria Austin, Elizabeth Austin Asch, and 13 grandchildren.
The family of Sy Bortz is deeply grateful to the all the compassionate caregivers at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital, especially Ernst Oidtmann, MD and Shagun Saggar, MD.
A graveside service with military honors for Sy will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at 4 PM in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Enfield, NH with the Rev. Ray Hartman officiating.
